Certain Advantage is hiring for a Mechanical Project Engineer based in Derby.

This role is on a permanent basis and is primarily site-based, with some flexibility and client travel.

The Company:
We are working with a growing rail engineering services provider based in Derby, supporting passenger and freight operators across the UK. With an expanding pipeline of rolling stock modification and refurbishment programmes, the business is investing in its engineering capability and team.

The Role:
This role is for a Mechanical Project Engineer with rolling stock experience, leading projects across passenger and freight fleets.
You will take ownership of technical delivery, manage a small team of design engineers, and act as a key interface between customers, stakeholders, and internal teams.

Day to Day:
  • Lead rolling stock modification and refurbishment projects across passenger and freight fleets
  • Manage and support a small team of design engineers
  • Collaborate with customers, contractors, and internal teams to deliver technical solutions
  • Influence design strategy and contribute to technical decision-making
  • Support First in Class installations and fleet-wide deployment programmes
  • Resolve design and engineering challenges during installation and delivery phases
  • Ensure all engineering documentation meets compliance and industry standards
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders, maintaining strong working relationships
  • Contribute to continuous improvement across engineering processes and delivery
The Individual:
  • Background in rolling stock engineering (mechanical, electrical, or interiors)
  • Experience delivering engineering projects and managing design teams
  • Proficient in 2D/3D CAD
  • Strong understanding of engineering change, documentation, and compliance
  • Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (HND considered with experience)
  • Commercially aware and confident in customer-facing environments
