Top Tips for temping

So, you’ve smashed your interview and are about to start your next temporary assignment, no doubt using our advice! Prior to your first day on the job, we’ll provide you with a written and verbal briefing on your new temporary or interim assignment. It’s likely that your employer will also allocate someone to provide you with a full, first-day induction for you.

Whether it’s your first day temping or you’re a seasoned pro, it’s never too late to pick up some great habits. Check out our favourite tips for your next temporary assignment below.

Be on time

Seems obvious, we know, but this makes the all-important first impression to your new employer. If you’re delayed, ill, or otherwise unable to get to work, make sure you contact your consultant at Advantage Resourcing before 8:30am. They’ll alert your employer and arrange any necessary cover.

Show some enthusiasm

This could range from asking questions to show you’re engaged, seeking out additional tasks if you find yourself with nothing to do, or just generally getting to know the people you’ll be working with. This will develop relationships within your company, and could lead to an extended placement.

Stay Connected

Make sure your Certain Advantage consultant has your contact details, so they can keep in touch with you regularly throughout your assignment and make sure you’re getting on okay.

Dress for Success

Obviously a lot of us have gotten used to working in a somewhat more casual dress code for the past few years, but now offices are reopening and hybrid working is established across the world, it’s important to pay attention to the dress code of your new workplace, whatever it is.

If you’re unsure, just check with your consultant.

Get to grips with the details

Familiarise yourself with what your day-to-day will look like. Who is responsible for signing your timesheet? Who is your line manager? What are your allotted hours for the week? What’s your employer’s Health and Safety policy?

Whether it’s reaching out to your new colleagues for assistance with these or touching base with your Certain Advantage consultant, help is available – it pays to be organised!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Need some instructions on how to use the equipment or software at your assignment? Not certain how to do something you’ve been allocated?

Ask. It’s not worth suffering in silence, and your colleagues will be more than happy to help if you have any queries about your remit, or the tools needed to accomplish your tasks.

Take care of yourself

Starting a new assignment, especially at a fast-paced company, can have a strain on your mental and physical health – especially in the first few days and weeks. It’s really important that you don’t burn yourself out within a few weeks of starting – take the time doing activities and hobbies that you enjoy when you’re not working.

Making the right first impression and appearing enthusiastic is important, but your mental and physical health comes first, so take steps to ensure you’re maintaining a healthy work-life balance as soon as you start.
