Encourage others

Make sure you’re routinely encouraging your team and providing regular support to anyone who needs it. It’s integral for them to know they’re valued and that you believe in their abilities, and this is especially important as we begin the new year with a fresh approach. Creating a confident, enthusiastic team is not only important for productivity but also for employee wellbeing, and a positive, encouraging atmosphere will stand you in good stead throughout the year.

Be proud of small successes

For some people, it takes extraordinarily little to have a good day. Having your favourite food for lunch, catching up with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while, the sun in the sky, ticking off your tasks for the day – small pleasures like that can be just as great as getting that promotion, buying a new car, etc…and much more achievable in your day-to-day life.

Switch off

It’s crucial to make time for yourself and those around you. If your laptop is open at all hours of the day, whether you’re in the office or not, it’s going to make it harder and harder to unplug and focus on the important things – your family, friends, health, and overall happiness.

If you’re at work, get into the habit of stepping away from your desk to grab some fresh air, even if it’s just for a few minutes – your mind and body will thank you, and you’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle your workload.

Don’t dwell on past mistakes

Whether you emailed something confidential to the wrong person, dented your bumper in the office car park, or blurted out the wrong thing in a meeting – move on and look forward. Absolutely zero good comes of worrying about what happened or what you could have done differently – it’s happened.

We are only human – everyone makes mistakes, and the best course of action is to learn from it and do better next time.

Be kind to yourself

This goes together with the point above – just as it’s imperative not to beat yourself up for mistakes, it’s equally important to recognise your own personal milestones and achievements, even if nobody else does. Treat yourself for finishing an important project and be proud of everything you’ve accomplished both in and out of the office – no matter how big or small. These days, even the smallest victories count.
